HOGY IS VOLT?

HOW DID I GET THERE — Hungary 2023 — Directed by: Dorottya Márton — 30 min — Production: University of Theater and Film Arts — Producers: Atilla Csáky

After her grandmother gifts her a lifetime of Olympus photographs, a filmmaker returns to Eger to reconstruct a childhood she barely remembers and to reconnect with the two women who raised her while her parents built a life in the United States.

The filmmaker’s grandmother documented her entire life with an Olympus camera. When she gifts her the full archive, the filmmaker is confronted with how few memories she has of their shared past — and how much of it she has taken for granted.

Until the age of six, she was raised on and off in Eger, a small Hungarian town, by her grandmother and the next-door neighbor, while her parents tried to establish a new life in the United States. After being reunited with her parents, she grew distant from the two women and never truly examined this formative period.

The film follows her return to Eger as she reconnects with them and, together, they attempt to piece back the timeline of her early childhood — and understand the decisions that led to her living separated from the rest of her family.
