NEUROTYYPIT

NEUROTYPES — Finland 2024 — Directed by: Maija Hirvonen — 76 min — Spoken language: Finnish — Subtitles: English — Production Compnany: Mouka Filmi Oy — Producer: Juha Löppönen

Aida, a gifted autistic girl overwhelmed by the school system, becomes an unlikely young activist demanding real change for neurodiverse children.

Aida explores stones and experiments; she is gifted in both language and science. But school means stress and sensory overload for her. Social interaction often triggers anxiety. Aida is a child on the autism spectrum — and she is also a strong young personality. Inspired by Greta Thunberg and supported by her mother, she becomes an activist. Despite her difficult, exhausting everyday life, she addresses politicians and the public with demonstrations, conducts surveys, and tirelessly explains what life is like for neurodivergent people in our society. Aida does not want pity but change. She demands a school system in which neurodiverse children and young people are supported and able to thrive.

Aida’s fight requires strength and patience, yet she finds allies and community along the way. Maija Hirvonen’s documentary is both a portrait and an urgent plea. It challenges our normalized patterns of thinking. How just is this society — and for whom?
