SONGS FROM PEOPLE'S ISLAND — Hungary, United Kingdom 2024 — Directed by: Danijar Bíró — 25 min — Producer: Danijar Bíró — Production Company: Triad Visions

A musical portrait of Budapest’s transforming rust belt, seen through the eyes of a homeless islander witnessing gentrification on People’s Island.

The skeletal remains of factories on People’s Island stand as relics of a time when this landscape was a major industrial zone of Budapest and the Danube. Today, the rust belt is rapidly reshaped, taking on a new face each year. While change is inevitable, questions remain: in whose interest is the island being transformed, and what does it mean for those who live there?

Songs from People’s Island is a visual study and musical panorama, infused with elements of absurdist tragicomedy. From the perspective of a homeless islander, it explores the experience of gentrification and the fragile coexistence of past and future on this contested ground.
