YOUR FATHER AND I DON'T USUALLY TALK ABOUT SUCH THINGS... — Hungary 2024 — Directed by: Dávid András Szabó — 13 min — Spoken language: Hungarian

A filmmaker turns the camera toward his parents to unravel the love, frustration, and asymmetry that shaped their marriage and his own place within it.

Dávid András Szabó sets out to understand the relationship between his parents, and through it, his own. As conversations with his mother unfold, a portrait emerges of a marriage defined by sacrifice, where a father’s unrealized artistic ambitions quietly shaped family life. Yet the idealized figure that appears in his mother’s self-effacing narrative gradually dissolves, revealing a fallible, ordinary man seen through the filmmaker’s more distanced eye.

What begins as a search for answers becomes a reflection on the shifting, unequal dynamics of love between two people. Intimate, vulnerable, and deeply personal, the film traces how a family’s emotional landscape is etched into the son who now tries to understand it.
