DOC AROUND EUROPE Award goes to THE GRANDFATHER PUZZLE

The award comes with €1,000 in travel support for the filmmaker to join our Doc Around Europe event during the Berlinale 2026.

We are pleased to announce that the DOC AROUND EUROPE Award at Verzió DOC LAB 2025 goes to THE GRANDFATHER PUZZLE (Hungary/USA), a deeply personal project in development by director Ora DeKornfeld.

The film follows DeKornfeld’s journey to reconnect with her 100-year-old Hungarian grandfather, a Holocaust survivor who now spends his days completing jigsaw puzzles. By travelling to the key locations of his escape story and transforming them into custom puzzles, the director attempts to piece together the stories he has never been willing to share — while reflecting on her own patterns of displacement and the challenge of building a stable life and family.
An intimate and multi-layered exploration of intergenerational trauma, memory and belonging, the project convinced the jury with its emotional clarity and sensitive cinematic approach.
