Biography

"Kokutekeleza Musebeni has been studying documentary filmmaking at the University of Television and Film Munich since 2018. Her Afrofuturist film The Door of Return was screened at several Academy Award-qualifying festivals and received multiple nominations. In 2021, it was honored with the German Newcomer Film Award.

In 2024, Musebeni made her television directorial debut with episodes 1 to 3 of the children's series Echt Friends (Season 1), available on ZDFmediathek and nominated for the 2025 Grimme Award. Her Afrofuturist documentary The Thoughts of Our Ancestors was a semifinalist in the 2024 Student Academy Awards and won the Ja’Net DuBois Festival Award at the 33rd Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles (2025).

She is currently developing her debut feature film, working under the title The Spirits of the Ancestors.
