Biography

Tobias Preisig is a violinist and film composer from Zurich whose work explores the intersections of experimental, classical and electronic music. He mainly composes for documentary films, including First Lap Crash, Social Landscapes, Alma, Anders Anders, Plötzlich Heimweh and Die Zwangsarbeiterinnen. His approach often incorporates field recordings and sound design elements drawn directly from a film’s locations, scenes and sonic environment, weaving them into the musical composition.

Alongside his work for film, Preisig performs internationally as a solo artist and with the electronica duo Egopusher, with appearances at festivals including Montreux Jazz, Tauron Katowice, London Jazz and Tokyo Jazz. With pianist and organist Stefan Rusconi, he forms Levitation, a duo exploring church organ, violin, drones and atmospheric noise. He has also collaborated with artists including Colin Stetson, The Cinematic Orchestra, FAUST, Youn Sun Nah and Jan Bang.

Preisig received the Werkjahr cultural award from the City of Zurich in 2012, was selected for Pro Helvetia’s Priority Jazz programme, and received the Canton of Zurich’s Recognition Award in 2018. In 2026, he was nominated for the German Documentary Film Music Award at DOK.fest München.

In 2024, he completed a Master’s degree in Composition with a focus on Sound Design at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).
